Homeowners understand that the need to check a renovation contractor’s references but many times they aren’t sure what questions to ask.
Some homeowners believe that they don’t need to check references. They believe that "no one will provide a poor reference". Unfortunately, if you don't check references, you make it easy for the unscrupulous contractor to succeed.
The questions listed below were crafted by a company that has spent years advising and educating both homeowners and residential contractors on professional business practices.
The company recommends that you prepare a list of 5 to 10 questions to ask each person. Obtain a rating on timeliness, quality, cleanliness, adherence to price and professionalism.
Confirm the project that the renovator performed. Being prepared for the reference calls will give you a quick way to determine who is better.
Having a list of prepared questions will put you at ease and make it easier to get the answers you really want.
Basic questions you may want to ask:
- Did they start when they said they would?
- Did they clean up at the end of each day?
- Was the proposal price they quoted what you paid? If it wasn’t ask for details.
- How did they handle problems during the job?
- Were they courteous to everyone in your home?
- Have you recommend them to anyone you know?
- Why did you choose them in the first place?
Naturally, you should add any other questions that are important to you to this list.
